What the law requires
Emergency lighting falls under the same duty as the rest of the fire strategy: the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires it to be maintained in efficient working order. BS 5266-1 sets the testing regime — a short monthly function test and a full annual duration test — with both recorded and certified.

What an inspector sees

Who does the monthly function test?
Usually a duty holder on site, using the switch or fuse arrangement set up for the system. We supply the record sheet and check it's been kept up at the annual visit.
What happens if a unit fails its duration test?
It's logged as a defect with a fixed price to replace or repair, and flagged in the report against that unit and site so it isn't missed at the next test.
