Smart lighting controls

Presence and daylight controls, DALI dimming and scheduling added to a lighting scheme so it only runs at full output when a space actually needs it.

Why it matters

Lighting left running in an empty room or a daylit space is wasted load. Presence detection switches or dims when an area is unoccupied, daylight sensing trims output when there's enough natural light, and DALI control gives each fitting or zone its own addressable setting rather than one switch for the whole circuit. Part L expects controls of this kind on new and materially altered lighting installations.

ILUX adds controls to new schemes as standard and retrofits them into existing installations where the wiring supports it.

What's included

  • Presence and absence detection by zone, set to the area's use
  • Daylight sensing to trim output near windows and roof lights
  • DALI addressable control for zone-by-zone or fitting-by-fitting dimming
  • Time-based scheduling for areas with predictable opening or occupation hours
  • Integration with existing building management systems where one is in place
  • Commissioning report confirming each zone responds as designed

Controls are commissioned zone by zone, so a sensor set wrong in one area doesn't get copied across the rest of the building.

Design

Controls work best specified with the layout, not bolted on after.

Zoning and sensor placement are easier to get right when they're part of the original design. See how controls fit into a full lighting design.

Retrofitting controls into an existing scheme

Most buildings don't need a rewire to add controls. Sensors and DALI drivers can usually be added at the fitting or the local distribution board, so control is added without disturbing existing containment.

Common questions.

Can controls be added to an existing installation?

Usually yes, without rewiring the whole building. The survey confirms what the existing circuits and fittings will support.

What's the difference between DALI and a simple sensor switch?

A sensor switch turns a circuit on or off. DALI addresses each fitting individually, so dimming and grouping can change without rewiring.

Do controls need commissioning after install?

Yes. Each zone is tested and adjusted so sensors and schedules match how the space is actually used, not just the design intent.
