What the law requires
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must keep the fire alarm system maintained in efficient working order and must be able to evidence it. BS 5839-1 sets out the record-keeping: a log book, weekly test entries and a certificate of inspection and servicing at intervals not exceeding six months.

What an inspector sees

Who keeps the weekly test record?
Someone on site does the test, but we supply the log book and check it's been kept up at every six-monthly visit, so a gap is caught early rather than found by an inspector.
Can you take over compliance for a system you didn't install?
Yes. The first visit is a full inspection that rebuilds the log book and zone chart from what's actually on site, so the register starts from an accurate baseline.
