What the law requires
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical equipment to be maintained to prevent danger, without naming PAT testing itself. The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is the recognised way to demonstrate that duty, with retest intervals set by appliance type and use.

Common questions.
Does every appliance need testing every year?
No. Intervals follow the IET Code of Practice and depend on the appliance and how it's used — a fixed office monitor needs testing far less often than a kettle in a staff kitchen.
What happens to a failed appliance?
It's labelled as failed, taken out of use if it's a safety risk, and logged as a defect with a fixed price to repair or replace, tracked to close-out.
