A two-metre pendant that didn't exist until we built it.
The Beaverbrooks refit in Glasgow needed a centrepiece light to match a new oval counter. Nothing on the market came in the right shape or size, so ILUX designed and built one from a single photograph, and had it installed before the doors reopened.

The brief
Beaverbrooks were refitting their Glasgow store. At the centre of the new layout was a curved counter, oval in plan, designed to be the focal point of the shop floor. The store wanted a light above it that followed the same shape: a crystal ring pendant like the ones already used elsewhere in the store, but stretched into an elliptical form, roughly 2000mm long by 1000mm wide.
The reference was a standard, off-the-shelf round ring pendant hanging in the store's Diamonds & Weddings room. The problem was that the product only comes as a circle, and not at that size. No manufacturer offered the shape the store needed, and the design had to land inside a fixed refit programme with a public reopening date.
What ILUX did
We were sent one photograph of the round pendant and the dimensions of the counter it needed to sit above. From that, ILUX designed a bespoke elliptical version: the same crystal-prism finish and brushed metal frame as the original, scaled up and re-engineered as a 2m by 1m oval so the geometry mirrored the counter and the ceiling recess above it.
- Design developed from a single reference photo and the counter dimensions, agreed with the store before build
- Custom fabrication of the elliptical frame, crystal elements and integrated LED lighting
- Suspension and fixing designed for the weight and span of a 2m piece, set into the new ceiling
- Delivery and installation programmed around the shopfitting works, with the light commissioned before handover
The piece was designed, built and installed within the refit timetable. The store reopened on schedule with the pendant in place and lit.
A centrepiece that looks like it was always meant to be there.
The oval pendant sits directly above the counter, echoing its shape and the recessed ceiling around it. It reads as part of the original store design rather than a compromise, which is what the brief asked for.
Why it matters for a multi-site retailer
Most store refits use catalogue products, and most of the time that is the right call. Occasionally the design calls for something that doesn't exist yet. Having a lighting contractor who can design and build a one-off, to a fixed deadline, means the store gets the design it wanted instead of the nearest thing available.
ILUX handles the whole of a store's lighting, from design and LED retrofits to emergency lighting and ongoing planned maintenance, under one contract across every site.
From reference to finished piece.

Common questions.
Can ILUX build a bespoke light fitting for our store?
Yes. Send a photo, a drawing or a description and the dimensions of the space. We'll confirm whether it can be built, what it will look like and how long it needs, before anything is committed.
Does bespoke lighting fit into a store refit programme?
It has to. We agree the design early, build off site while the shopfitting is under way and install once the ceiling is ready, so the piece is lit and commissioned before the store reopens.
Who maintains a one-off fitting afterwards?
We do. A bespoke piece is added to the site's asset register like any other fitting and covered under the same planned and reactive contract as the rest of the store.
